Fat Dog Cafe, Rotorua

Rotorua's Eat Street - Selection of award-winning restaurants and cafes

Fat Dog cafe is one of favorites - big servings, beautiful menu choices and free wifi! Most importantly, it's a 10 minute walk away from MALFROY motel, our accommodation of choice in Rotorua.

The Best Cafe in Wanganui is Big Orange

No beating around the bush. The best cafe in Wanganui is Big Orange.
They have the right formula for taste of coffee, value for money, location, customer service and menu options. This cafe is practically a tourist destination in the Wanganui-Manawatu region and perhaps deserves more mentions online.

I consider these top 3 aspects as the main reasons why I would recommend any cafe.

1. Customer Service. Yes it matters. Cafe lovers like myself consider cafes as our little escape on a challenging work day.  A cafe is where some of the best creative juices come out.  It's a place where I can be most productive at work.  I personally feel refreshed after seeing people who are happy and friendly. Most cafe lovers though want to feel they are welcome and they are part of the town's little coffee lover's club. I'd join that club if there was such a thing in Wanganui ;-)

The entire experience starts with customer service.

2. Menu Options and Pricing
- Perfect combination of taste, presentation, ingredients, serving size and price
- Value for money is the key here.
- $15-18 for eggs benedict and $4 for a coffee only sound ridiculous if do not get that unique flavour. Often, I pay $18 for eggs benedict... some are ultra-cheesy disappointments. However, Big Orange's Mushroom on Sourdough Toast is a breath of fresh air. It's just the right size and it's just the right price at $16.50.  It has, I believe, the little details which make me appreciate it more: a bit of pesto, parmesan, loads of mushroom, my favourite bread type and I think a bit of balsamic. So there, that's something I can't really make at home.
- I might sound like a broken record but for the others who just read about my posts on Big Orange, they have the best coffee (mochaccino, cappuccino and plain long black).

3. Ambience
- Music (Jazz, Classical, Guitar, some beat)
- Location (sun, sun and more sun) People want to go out and embrace that good vibe. If you don't have an outside area or not much of sunroom in your cafe, I suggest having brighter coloured rooms / furniture and interiors. Plants and fresh flowers help, too.
- Did I forget to say Big Orange has free wifi on top of being close to a Telecom Wifi zone?

Big Orange transforms into Ceramic Lounge at night and jazz bands play gigs there occasionally. They have wider range of menu offerings now and I get the sense that the management and staff are quite keen to improve their game year after year! I like Big Orange because I like it's one of the cafes where I can see people proud of their work and make extra effort to make their food creations a bit more special... at an affordable price.

No I don't get any favors or fees to endorse this establishment. I just love coffee and I'm a foodie.
And when I get a unique and worthwhile experience, I make sure I write a positive review.

Rapido Cafe, Wanganui

Rapido cafe in Wanganui - This cafe has good coffee, brewed coffee and cappuccino.  I've visited this cafe a couple of times this October. It's better to visit them in the afternoon when it's a sunny day, otherwise, it's a little cold and dark inside.

Their cake selections are not very good though and this time I made a mistake ordering the carrot cake. Carrot cake is easily my favorite so I would think it's a safe choice in cafes I go to. However, this time, it's just not my taste. The best carrot cake is Mischief on Guyton's carrot cake.

In terms of look and feel, this cafe has a semi-50's (old style appeal). It's located off the road from Victoria avenue very near Parnell's cafe.

Rapido cafe doesn't have wifi.

Just my two cents on what can be done to improve customer experience:
1.  new choice of pastries - a bit of taste tests

Patagonia Chocolates Queenstown

What's going for this cafe?
1. It is unique. It has a unique taste - it has a specialty. It's not just another cafe out there.
2. It is in front of the remarkable view Lake Wakatipu and the mountains. It is centrally located...Superb location is an understatement.
3. It has FREE wifi. It has Fast Wifi! Well, as long as not a lot of people are using it...
4. It has the best ice cream - another unique strength.
5. It has outdoor areas - perfect to be under the sun in any season...

This is an icon in Queenstown. They also have a shop in Arrowtown. Kudos to the owners. :)

Thank you for this superb experience in Queenstown. I will definitely go back - regularly :-)

I Love Rosie Slice

I think this piece of cake is $4. It's the only thing I order over and over again for Orange Cafe, in Whanganui ... It's a true taste sensation. I must probably just miss the coconut infused meals in the Philippines but this lovely cake is great with a nicely brewed coffee.

Yes I continue my love for cafes. If it's too sweet, I just make sure I drink a litre of water for the next 2 hours.

I found this blog that has a recipe for Rosie Slice.

If you ever come by Wanganui, I recommend staying at Aotea Motor Lodge, best accommodation in Whanganui, and stop by Orange cafe for this wonderful Rosie slice.

Element Cafe, Wanganui New Zealand

I love cafes and this is why I try to visit all cafes possible in every place I visit.
I got a blueberry and lemon muffin with a hot mochacino at Element cafe, Wanganui. This cafe is located at
Wanganui's mainstreet - Victoria avenue.

Total order $11. My coffee mate's order is also $11 - $5 coffee, $6 pastry, approximately.

This cafe has a beautiful setting - austere actually. The price of goodies is slightly more expensive than other cafes in town.

I have visited Element cafe several times before. However it's not my personal favorite. It doesn't have a cosy feel. I do take business clients here instead.

Wanganui, as small town as it is, has more than 25 cafe choices - each unique with their own food preparations, location, interior design.

Wanganui will surprise tourists - local or foreign. If you ever visit Wanganui, I highly recommend staying at Aotea Motor Lodge http://aoteamotorlodge.co.nz - upmarket hotel yet very affordable. Truly worth it.

Cafe in Wanganui, Big Orange

Blue cheese and online muffin with a warm mochacino while reading today's paper at Wanganui's Big Orange Cafe. I keep coming back to this cafe because it's reasonably priced. $8 for a coffee and a muffin.
Believe me ... that price is already considered "reasonable" in Wanganui. That's for 1 person.

It is also so inviting to see those orange big umbrellas outside the cafe under the hot sun and cool breeze.

Here's a list of where you can eat in Wanganui.

Gloria Jean's Wellington, NZ

Wellington has been named as New Zealand's "coolest" little city. I can understand why.
It looks like a miniature mix of Melbourne and Sydney with it's old Victorian style buildings converted into cafes and boutique shops.

The city is very small and I was able to walk around it within 2 hours... well at least the part that looks like a 'city'.

The city center has FREE wifi. When you try to login for some free internet connection, open your browser and you need to authenticate first by choosing a 'sponsor'. I figured out however that I can have many different sponsors so the 30 mins free wifi per sponsor could turn into 2 hours free use. Pretty convenient and I hope Wellington keeps that for the sake of tourists.

I visited Gloria Jean's cafe not because I love it. I chose Gloria Jeans strategically! It is a well-known franchise and likely the staff won't mind if I stay 2 hours in the cafe while working on important files.  Other boutique cafes which I would have preferred would be stricter.

The coffee at Gloria Jeans is $4.5 per cup - around the average price really.

Did I enjoy it? Well it is a practical choice as I said. :-)

However, next time when I am less busy, I'll try something more boutiquey :)

Handmade Chocolate - Patagonia, Queenstown New Zealand

Patagonia is a small chocolate business based in Queenstown New Zealand. It's the only cafe in Queenstown offering free wifi internet.

Twice a week, I visit Patagonia during my stay in Queenstown.

Why?
It's certainly not because of the coffee - it costs a whopping $5.5 for a moccachino there.

It's not because of the chocolate either.

It's because of the extremely beautiful location - in front of the lake - Lake Wakatipu.

It's also because it offers free wifi - albeit slow and you can only check email...
